The word paleo like the word berry can mean a number of things. Depending on who is talking, or who is selling the latest diet fad. We are more interested about the diet of the closest related animals to us, and what is the longest recorded diet of our ancestors? I love bigfoot but the closest thing to the missing link is us or guerillas, both of us can be huge by only eating plants. While studying nutrition my professor Dr. Gregor taught about the proponents to plantbased eating as a way to avoid and or reverse disease. Plantbased doesn’t mean void of animals, it means the foundation of your diet is plants and 1-5% can be meat if you feel so inclined. A 2018 review of the diet of hunter-gatherer populations found that the dietary provisions of the palelothic diet had been based on questionable research, and were “difficult to reconcile with more detailed ethnographic and nutritional studies of hunter-gatherer diet”.

While there is wide variability in the way the paleo diet is interpreted, the diet typically includes vegetables, fruits, nuts, roots, and meat and typically excludes foods such as dairy products, grains, sugar, legumes, processed oils, salt, alcohol or coffee.[additional citation(s) needed] The diet is based on avoiding not just processed foods, but rather the foods that humans began eating after the Neolithic Revolution when humans transitioned from hunter-gatherer lifestyles to settled agriculture. The ideas behind the diet can be traced to Walter Voegtlin, and were popularized in the best-selling books of Loren Cordain.
I completely do not care what our ancestors were eating since they were starving and surviving most of the time and we have no idea what was optimal health for them since their diets surely fluctuated from region to region and what was available. What is clear is that when we eat fiber, lots of it and cut out all processed foods including dairy we start to thrive.
So you have had nothing but celery and green drinks since January 1st and you are beginning to wonder will this be my life? I mean I feel amazing but am I going to be like a pet eating the same thing every day? What about hot dogs, french fries, and birthday cake? You might have lost some weight or found a way to be consistent but the junk food fairy buzzing around your ear is like don’t you miss ice cream? Or your friend with the weird health issue keeps asking, “where you going to get your protein from green drinks?” Animal bodies including humans are super adaptive and will ultimately be their natural size with optimal nutrition. Elephants, guerillas, rhinos all are large and only eat grass and plants, we get our protein very easily when we are fed nutrient dense food. Anyone that makes sure to get their protein every day is fat and anyone with a deficiency is flat out starving. People can gain weight or lose weight eating any type of healthy foods at large amounts. Diets are simply what we choose to eat each day and not some program or membership. The point of taking a day, a week, or 40 days to alter the diet to a minimum food selection, is to give your body time to rest and catch up.
In order to get different results, we must make changes that last. The goal I have for everyone I work with is to eat nutrient-dense food over anything else. Cravings are typically a sign of dehydration or a lack of mineral or nutrient. Before there were stores we would go looking for what our bodies craved. Supple sweet fruits and vegetables full of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients with varying bright colors. Colors mean, Chlorophyll, carotenoids, flavonols, potassium, vitamin A, vitamin C, and folate. When you look at food marketing the colors are really obvious. Red and yellow are used on food packaging everywhere, all the fast food logos as well.
According to Business Insider,
“The color yellow elicits a feeling of comfort, while red tends to make people feel more hungry and impulsive.”
Ok, so the Man is messing with our natural impulses but wait there’s more. We also have bacteria evolved beyond us genetically in our guts screaming for high-calorie simple carbs and fats such as big macs, donuts, and chips. Yes, the microflora in our guts is possibly smarter than us and able to control our impulses, or at least influence us even at a hormonal level! The only way to win this battle is to withhold foods from them that they are used to having from your food choices. Every time you eat simple high-calorie low nutrient foods like fast food, you teach the bugs to get you to eat it again later! Do you want to take the red pill and learn more or the blue pill and forget we ever talked?
A craving is from inside you, you taught yourself, or the bugs inside you to crave food. The best part is within a 40 day period you can retrain your gut bacteria to crave foods that are nutrient dense and make you feel like running instead of going back to bed after breakfast. I am not saying that you will not salivate when you smell barbeque or want to eat cake when it is handed to you. However, you can ask yourself what outcome do you want to feel afterward. If meat cravings were real then everyone’s pets would be eaten. You do not crave meat, that’s what carnivores crave. Carnivores drool over a dead animal bleeding out. If you crave meat for every meal then start eating it without salt or sauce and once in a while uncooked. I crave barbeque the burned bits, the sugar, the salt, and the fat, beyond those three things it can be almost anything edible like mushrooms, tempeh, zucchini, or romaine lettuce put on the grill.
Water, water, water, being dehydrated is usually the first solution to any food craving. We are bored and want mouth pleasure, we are avoiding work, we are eating our feelings. Take control spray it really helps for food cravings and feeling out of control in general. Stay away from all substitute sweeteners they light up the brain and create impulse cravings. When the tongue taste sweetness, but sugar never hits the stomach, the stomach acids keep getting made to prepare for this food you never ate. Go on walks, go get to work, get some sleep, eat celery all day long. Cravings are annoying, take note when you have them. What is the craving, when is the craving, what’s going on in your life? What do you have control over? The cravings stop when you take control of your life and your choices instead of impulsively living each day.
Our world is full of things we cannot control that have an effect on our health. Where we grow up, genes from our parents, chemicals used in buildings, the sun, the air, water and the quality of those interactions. Many things can initiate cancer in every person’s body. However, the promotion or accelerated growth of these cancers can be controlled by what we eat and how often. Rats often used in experiments have a short lifespan and quick reproductive rate. We are ethically obligated to use rats over human test for moral reasons. Anyone that owns pets in America is familiar with starting to feel bumps or tumors while petting or handling their animal. The common stance is that tumors are perfectly normal and part of the aging process in your pet rat or dog. The familiarity of tumors in pets is starting to be as common as cancer diagnosis for a family member or neighbor. What are the links and commonalities between observation and actual test?
In rat studies on protein consumption, an increase of over 5% of protein in the diet would push tumor growth from initiation induced by a carcinogen into promotion or multiplying tumor cells even quadrupling tumor growth. The centenarians(groups living to age 100 or older) living in Okinawa had a 5% protein consumption due to lifestyle and availability of food. When more western lifestyle practices and food additions to the diet hit the region, so did western diseases and the lower life expectancy of this population, including an increase in cancer. We do not need to do test on humans since we have data and companies doing the test on us without permission. Many people with older dogs as pets have felt the tumors while petting their fur. The tumors can be halted from growing and possibly reversed by the 5% rule of taking down the protein consumption. 5% of protein is not a visual scale either but 5% of caloric intake. So plant consumption in an average human’s or omnivores diet must be greater than the typical side dish of corn or peas next to a 12 oz steak. The study also found that when the rats were fed 20% wheat or soy protein that there was no tumor growth, confirming that it was specifically protein derived from animals.
Eating meat sparingly as well as all other animal products are the key factors in controlling tumor growth in the body over all other factors including chemicals, or family history. Diet is as important to cancer as fertilizer and sunshine is to plants. We must have seeds in soil to sprout but to get plants to grow and develop we must have sun and fertilizer. Diet is the key factor in taking cancer from its beginning stage to its invasion stage. Eating gallons of blueberries for antioxidants will not be as effective if you are constantly giving your cells the building blocks of cell growth as well as the accelerators. We need our cells to keep reproducing and repairing but doing this quickly exceeds all cell growth as well as tumor cell or cancer cell growth.
The Ninja Turtles in real life would be OBESE, have osteoporosis, rickets, and suffer from depression due to a vitamin D deficiency. The Ninja Turtles were created as a joke comic, then they were turned into a beloved cartoon and movie franchise with unlimited toys. I myself spent hours holding a Raphael or Michelangelo action figure with steroid size muscles and wondered how I would get strong like them someday. They ate a lot of pizza and junk food and stayed in the dark. Almost all creatures need sun especially reptiles to increase the conversion of vitamin D. Vitamin D is a prehormone and was mislabeled a vitamin but never was renamed.
Getting adequate sunlight each day or taking a vitamin D supplement is imperative in our current mostly indoor style of living. According to hormones.org, “Studies show that people who have low vitamin D levels are more likely to be obese. Researchers have found that vitamin D helps regulate adrenaline, noradrenaline (also called norepinephrine), and dopamine production in the brain; as well as helping to protect from serotonin depletion. For this reason, low vitamin D levels increase an individual’s risk of depression significantly. A better understanding of vitamin D function is necessary to fully comprehend how it is linked to so many health concerns.”
Just because you might tell your dog to quit licking themselves here is this tidbit. “Cats and dogs naturally acquire vitamin D nutrient from UVB sunlight. Unlike humans and reptiles, cats and dogs do not make vitamin D in their skin. When UVB rays strike an animal’s fur, oils in the fur are activated to produce vitamin D. Cats and dogs consume vitamin D when they lick or groom their coats”
I take this brand for vitamin D3 and recommend that people take 5000 to 10,000iu a day during the winter and when they are not going outside regularly.
Ray Cronise also known as Crayray helped lead Penn Jillete of Penn and Teller Magician fame to lose 100lbs without exercise. Exercise is great for your body but not key to weight loss. Just by getting colder throughout the day and ending your showers for 30 seconds to a minute will speed up weight loss. (one thing I learned is to never get your head wet with cold water and hands during the cold phase of the shower if you can help it, it just hurts to have a brain freeze.)
In 2014 I learned about Wim Hof, a man from the Netherlands nicknamed the Ice Man. Wim has done incredible things in order to prove to the world that we have control over our autonomic nervous system. Wim can teach anyone how to control the immune system and regulate their temperature in extreme conditions. One of the benefits I love is the ability to hold my breath for over 3 minutes. When I keep a consistent practice of the breathing and cold plunge I am able to keep out of depression cycles, stay warm in the cold and not get sick. People with autoimmune diseases are able to reduce their symptoms and recover from relapses faster. The average person feels clear-headed, stronger, relaxed and is able to perform better in all things. A recent study has shown that Wim and people he trains in a few days have the ability to attack viruses in the body such as Ecoli . My wife Marta learned how to make quinoa from a Peruvian and now it always has the perfect mouthfeel and flavor. Quinoa is a seed that grows in the high mountain regions. Quinoa is not a grass, it is a cereal like seed in the spinach and amaranth family. You can use it instead of rice, like oatmeal, in cold salads, even into a gluten-free pizza crust. There are 3 colors white, red and black, the darker ones tend to be more of an earthy flavor however they have more nutrients. With food, if you taste bitter or stronger flavors it typically means more minerals and nutrients.
Bring a pot of water to boil at least two times the water to dry quinoa.
Once water is at a full boil pour in the dry quinoa.
Cook for 10-15mins less time for firmer quinoa. (if you are making a salad with it you will want to cook it less.)
Strain Quinoa and then rinse.
Samuel Adams talks about how to obtain a 40lb box of bananas for $10, and then demonstrates what to do with the bounty. Organic bananas will cost more but taste better. Depending where you live like NYC, it can be hard to get an entire box of over ripe bananas but not impossible. Most store managers will sell you boxes for half the price.
Robyn O’Brien was just a Mom trying to feed her kids. One morning while eating Eggo waffles, yogurt and eggs, her baby looked she was choking. They rushed her to the hospital and the doctor said your kids allergic to food. The questions from Robyn were, “Why is food poisonous for kids?” and “What was added to our food that has increased the likelihood of allergies?” Robyn learned of the changes she and her family had to make and has since strived to educate everyone that will listen.
When I first thought of going on picnics as a veg head it seemed like it was going to suck. The reality of plant based eating is that their is so much to eat and sometimes the focus on fruits and vegetables forces creativity. Coconut fried tofu with sushi quinoa/brown rice, seaweed salad, corn salad, and a pint of strawberries. We ate our picnic on the Hudson while the sun set and it was nice until it instantly got freezing.
sushi quinoa/brown rice
cook brown rice and quinoa together in a pot and let cool
add rice vinegar, sugar or stevia to taste and a few drops of soy sauce.
